“Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying.” (Ephesians 4:29, KJV)
Words can strengthen courage or deepen wounds. Because Jesus is Lord over every part of life, our speech matters: in the home, at work, online, and in private conversations. Speaking life does not mean flattering people or hiding necessary truth. It means choosing words that are honest, timely, and aimed at what is good rather than at humiliation or revenge.
Before speaking, consider whether your words are true, necessary, and fitting for the moment. Anger may reveal that something needs attention, but it does not have to dictate how you address it. Ask questions before assuming motives. Correct behaviour without attacking a person’s worth. When you have spoken carelessly, acknowledge the harm, apologise without excuses, and change the pattern. Let your words become instruments of peace, clarity, courage, and healing.
Before your next important conversation, decide what needs to be said and how to say it truthfully without contempt. Listen to understand, not merely to prepare a reply. Refuse gossip and avoid forwarding words that may harm someone. If you speak harshly, apologise specifically and change your approach. Words shaped by Christ can clarify a problem, encourage a weary person, and protect a relationship from needless damage.
Speech shaped by Christ requires both courage and restraint. Silence can be wise when emotions are high, but silence can also avoid a truth that needs to be spoken. Ask the Lord for discernment about the right time, tone, and setting. Speak directly to the person involved rather than spreading the matter to others who cannot help resolve it. When conflict arises, seek clarity instead of winning at any cost. Words cannot always remove a wound immediately, but truthful and gracious speech can open a path toward understanding and repair.
